Coastal flooding and sea level rise will affect coastal regions in Papua New Guinea. In the last 15 years and through four catastrophic flood events, coastal floods have affected some 8,000 people a year. On an annualized basis, the floods cause USD 10-20m of damage, displaced 500 people and killed five. Rising sea levels worsen the effect of coastal floods and necessitated the evacuation of people from the Carteret Atolls and Duke of York Islands, as salinization and flooding are damaging fragile communities and cultures, making these areas uninhabitable. Social and cultural issues with the displacement of people and communities have to be addressed.
