Briefing on the IMRF to the Global Task Force on Local and Regional Governments

Briefing on the IMRF to the Global Task Force on Local and Regional Governments

As stated in the UN Secretary-General Report on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), “the instrumental role of local actors in implementing the Compact, as first responders during crises and more generally, has become increasingly apparent.” Since the adoption of the GCM in 2018 and despite the constraints posed by COVID-19 on all communities, local and regional governments have been upholding their commitments towards multi-level and multi-stakeholder cooperation with a view make migration work for all.

This year, from May 16-20, 2022, Member States will come together for the first time to assess their progress towards the GCM at the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF). In view of this high-level political milestone, it will be critical to showcase that LRGs and their leaders continue to deliver pragmatic, ambitious action to meet and exceed the Global Compacts and the 2030 Agenda.

Under the theme Cooperation and Partnership: Implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, the United Nations Network on Migration (Network) will host a Migration Week on 14-18 February 2022. The Migration Week is an umbrella event inviting the Network’s partners at the global, regional and national levels, to hold or participate in events or activities as they prepare for the first IMRF.

On this occasion, the Secretariat of the GTF and the Mayors Mechanism — jointly steered by UCLG, the Mayors Migration Council, and the International Organization for Migration — invite members and partners of the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments to gather, exchange and consolidate the vision and expectations of our constituency in the road to the IMRF. Member States, UN agencies, civil society and other interested parties are welcome to observe the briefing and listen to the vision and expectations of Local and Regional Governments as they prepare for the IMRF.
