IML Information Note on the Protection of Unaccompanied Migrant Children

The purpose of this Information Note is to provide a broad overview of the human rights of unaccompanied migrant children. Unaccompanied children are entitled to international protection under international human rights law, international refugee law, international humanitarian law and various regional instruments, and it is essential that they are provided with effective protection and assistance in a systematic, comprehensive and integrated way. Obligations deriving from the Convention on the Rights of the Child vis-à-vis unaccompanied and separated children include the obligation to develop national legislation, establish administrative structures, carry out research and data compilation, and provide comprehensive training. The right of migrant children is a transversal theme across the GCM and, in particular, unaccompanied migrant children are mentioned in various objectives.
