Dr Maria Teresa Ferazzoli is a Research Associate in the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield with an interdisciplinary and multifaceted work experience as practitioner and academic.
Maria Teresa is working on the following research projects:

“Everyday Bordering’ in the UK: The impact on social care practitioners and the migrant families with whom they work”, led by Dr Julie Walsh. This study examines the intersections of place, immigration policy, migrant families everyday lives and social care practice.

“MIMY: EMpowerment through liquid Integration of Migrant Youth in vulnerable conditions” – EU Horizon 2020 fund project . The project takes an innovative multi-method approach which places young migrants at the centre of knowledge creation about their resilience, resistance and integration, and the impact of intersecting social inequalities.

In previous role she has worked on research projects that explore particularly sensitive subjects, including the role of faith-based organisations in anti-trafficking, and parent’s experiences of miscarriage, stillbirth and unexplained neonatal death.

Maria Teresa was awarded her PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2019 with the thesis “The formation of deinstitutionalization discourses in Italy and England: a cross-national archaeological study”. Before commencing her PhD studies at Sheffield she completed a Masters’ degree in Psychology at “La Sapienza” University of Rome and she worked as a project coordinator and research with the Newark branch of the national mental health charity Mind.

Mariña Fernández-Reino (PhD, Universitat Pompeu Fabra) is a Senior Researcher at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society and the Migration Observatory. She is currently the PI of a research project investigating migrants’ lived experiences of the UK immigration system, for which she is recruiting online survey respondents using Meta advertisements. She also leads two work packages within the EqualStrength project (“Cumulative discrimination and prejudice against marginalised groups in Europe”), funded by the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.

Throughout her academic career, she has investigated a variety of research topics related to migration and ethnic inequalities, including the discrimination of Latinos and Muslim minorities, public opinion towards migration, educational inequalities in Spain and the UK, relationships in migrant families, selectivity of migration inflows, and the labour market integration of migrant workers. She has published in journals such as European Sociological Review, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies and Oxford Review of Economic Policy, among others. Within her role at the Migration Observatory, she has authored over twenty briefings and reports on migrants’ integration, immigration policy and public attitudes towards migration.

Nuno did his undergraduate law studies at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and University of Bologna (Italy), and is a member of the Portuguese Bar. He worked as a legal consultant at the Legal Affairs and Litigation Department of the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), and as a research fellow at the Centre of European Law and Politics at the University of Bremen (ZERP) (Germany). He carried out his doctoral studies at the University of Bremen, where he obtained his Dr. jur. title (summa cum laude).

Nuno is a Horizon 2020 ERC Starting Grant recipient, leading the project SOGICA - Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Claims of Asylum (2016-2020), and co-director of the Sussex Centre for Human Rights Research.

About the Migration Network Hub

What is the Migration Network Hub?

The Hub is a virtual “meeting space” where governments, stakeholders and experts can access and share migration-related information and services. It provides curated content, analysis and information on a variety of topics.

The Hub aims to support UN Member States in the implementation, follow-up and review of the Global Compact for Migration by serving as a repository of existing evidence, practices and initiatives, and facilitating access to knowledge sharing via online discussions, an expert database and demand-driven, tailor-made solutions (launching in 2021).

What content is displayed in the Hub?

The Hub aims to help you find information on migration, ranging from policy briefs and journal articles, existing portals and platforms and what they offer, to infographics and videos. The different types of resources submitted by users undergo peer review by a panel of experts from within the UN and beyond, before being approved for inclusion in the Hub. To provide guidance to users based on findings of the needs assessment, the content is ordered so that more comprehensive and global resources are shown before more specific and regional ones.
