Diaspora, Development and Integration: A Review of Policies and Practice

Diaspora, Development and Integration: A Review of Policies and Practice

How does integration in the country of settlement matter for diaspora members’ development engagements in the Global South? And how has this intersection been addressed in policy and practice? These questions are explored through examples from Norway, where political efforts to include diasporas in development cooperation and foreign policy have been justified from an integration perspective. In this policy brief, the partial implementation of this policy and its relevance for remittances are evaluated, and the authors argue for the need to re-think how we understand the links between diaspora, development and integration.
