Youth Policy Brief for the Middle East & North Africa
The Migration Youth & Children Platform (MYCP) has produced a collective Youth Policy Brief outlining youth recommendations on key migration challenges across the Middle East and North America (in line with the ESCWA Regional Review). Youth priorities in the region were identified to be; trafficking in persons (GCM Objective 9 & 10), gender (GCM Objective 16 & 17), forced migration (GCM Objective 5 & 7), and economic opportunities (GCM Objective 6, 18 &19). The Youth Policy Brief was created in consultation with grassroots youth and youth-led organisations.
The key recommendations are:
- Forced Migration: Warring parties should immediately cease the practice of forcible transfer of persons to carry out violence and ethnic cleansing. Simultaneously, government actors should cease forcible returns of refugees.
- Trafficking in Persons: Regional governments must support and implement safe migration pathways within and outside the region, especially on the MENA-Europe migration corridors to protect the safety of children & youth in transit.
- Gender: Migration services must include support for acquiring income-generating opportunities, subsidised provision of care services, as well as increased availability of dedicated SGBV caseworkers, MHPSS workers and women's shelters.
- Economic Opportunities: Regional governments and international financial institutions should invest in improving broad social protection from the region and for migrants alike.
