Infosheet- EU-UN Building Migration Partnerships

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) provides for the
establishment of a capacity building mechanism that supports the efforts of United Nations
(UN) Member States to achieve migration governance which is in line with international
standards. The mechanism allows the UN, its Member States and other relevant
stakeholders, including the private sector and philanthropic foundations, to contribute
technical, financial and human resources on a voluntary basis in order to strengthen
capacities and foster multi-partner cooperation.

To support this mechanism, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Network on
Migration (Network) signed a partnership in October 2020 to pioneer capacity building
support. With this project, the Network leverages whole-of-UN expertise to help countries
facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration and make migration work for sustainable
development.

As coordinator and secretariat of the Network, the International Organization for Migration
(IOM) is leading the project, working closely with Network members - made up of UN
entities - and stakeholders.
