Expert-level meeting for delegates of Permanent Missions to the United Nations and Permanent Observers in New York
The United Nations Network (Network) on Migration would like to invite delegates of Permanent Missions of United Nations Member States and Permanent Observers in New York to informally discuss emerging issues and challenges in the implementation of the GCM. The meeting is organized to help inform the drafting of the Secretary-General’s report, by the Network, as called for by the GCM and will complement a series of discussions with delegates of Permanent Missions of United Nations Member States and Permanent Observers in Geneva.
The meeting will be held on Monday 15 November, 10.00 – 11.00 EST / 16.00 – 17.00 CEST, and will be fully virtual.
The Secretary-General’s report will focus on both the progress made in the implementation of the Global Compact and the institutional arrangements. It will also provide guidance for the International Migration Review Forum, its round tables and the policy dialogue, which will include a discussion on challenges in the implementation of the Compact, and on contemporary and emerging issues related to migration.
To facilitate a structured discussion, the following are a number of suggested framing questions:
- What have been the key challenges in implementing the GCM to date and what are some of the contemporary and emerging issues related to migration to be highlighted?
- Is there any possible guidance for the United Nations system to strengthen its efforts in improving system-wide effectiveness and coherence and in supporting Member States in implementing the Global Compact?
- Are there any practices outside of those that your government reported on during the regional reviews, that the report should take into consideration?
Proposed agenda:
10:00- 10:15 Briefing by Jonathan Prentice, Head of the secretariat of the UN Network on Migration
10:15- 10:50 Interactive discussion
10:50- 11:00 Wrap-up by John Wilmoth, Director, Population Division, UN DESA
Delegates are kindly invited to confirm their attendance to unmignet@iom.int. We will share the meeting link upon request here.
