Eva Fortes is a PhD candidate in the program of Political and Social Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, under the supervision of Dr. Matthias vom Hau, and a member of the GRITIM research group. She is a ”la Caixa” Foundation fellow through the PhD fellowship programme INPhINIT, working as a predoctoral researcher at the Institut de Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI).

Her research focuses on integration, inclusion, quality of life, the capabilities approach, migration policy, and city-level policies.

Political science professor Aude-Claire Fourot is deeply interested in how a city’s public policies can impact immigration resettlement. She also works with local communities to explore how settlement issues relating to ethnic and religious diversity, in turn, shape local public policy.

Theodoros Fouskas, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in Sociology with an emphasis on Migration and Public Health, Department of Public Health Policy, School of Public Health, University of West Attica (Greece). He published extensively on migration, migrant health, precarious employment, access to healthcare, social integration and exclusion. Since 2005, he has participated in many research programmes on migrants, refugees and other vulnerable groups.

Post-doctoral researcher in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Iceland. With extensive fieldwork experience in The Gambia, Chile, Morocco, Haiti, RD Congo, Turkey, Romania, and Spain, he does research in migration, transnationalism, (im)mobilities, humanitarianism, and informality. He has been the main editor of the journal Perifèria (2018–2021), and his work has been published in various peer-reviewed journals such as Social Anthropology (2019), Mobilities (2019), Migration Letters (2021), and Social Inclusion (2021).

I am a doctoral researcher at the Research Training Group “The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes and Public Policy” (DYNAMICS), which is jointly organized by the Humboldt University Berlin and the Hertie School. I am also a research associate at the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM), which is part of the Humboldt University Berlin.

My main interests are in immigration, the welfare state, and mixed methods.

For my dissertation, which is supervised by Anke Hassel, I analyze the experiences of refugees with Germany’s welfare state bureaucracy. I focus on the administrative burdens refugees face when navigating the welfare system in their destination country, how welfare bureaucracies adapt to immigration, and how to approach these questions using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

For my work at BIM, I focus more on the role of public opinion in how the welfare state addresses immigration. I conduct quantitative research on determinants of welfare chauvinism as part of a project called Migration and the Welfare State.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in sociology at New York University and my master’s degree in public policy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
