My name is Lutz Gschwind. I am a researcher in Political Science at the Department of Government, Uppsala University.

My research interests encompass political economy, social policy, international migration, economic integration and working conditions. I recently completed my PhD thesis which explores the social protection of immigrants in times of increasing welfare conditionality. I hold a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Konstanz as well as a MSc in Political Science from Uppsala University.

I am a linguist investigating narratives of migration, with a focus on European migrants in the UK, especially high-skilled migrants. I am also interested in representations of the Brain Drain in the Italian and Spanish press. I am interested in personal experiences of migration, in particular in relation to mental health and wellbeing, alongside identity and belonging. I have worked on hostility/microaggressions, offering suggestions as to how current models based in psychology/counselling could be strengthened by accurate linguistic analysis. My approach is informed by conversation/discourse analysis. When the dataset is large enough, I also adopt corpus linguistics.

I am Professor of social work and social policy at the Department of Social Work, Child Welfare and Social Policy (SCSP). I teach qualitative methods and "Integration through work and education" . I lead education-research collaboration projects with National Law School University, Bangalore and Higher School of Economics, Moscow. My research expertise lies within the fields of international and comparative anti-poverty policy, with a focus on the social psychological aspects of poverty and socioeconomic precarity, temporality and immigrant labor integration processes, the intersection between social work and social policy in theory and practice and qualitative research methodology.

Researcher and analyst in Geopolitics (International Security, Conflicts, Peace, Diplomacy in the Middle East/Asia/Horn of Africa with a focus on the Gulf). I have studied migrations in the Philippines, in the UAE as well as the Français de l'étranger (French diaspora).

I hold a doctorate in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). My research focused on the subjugating and/or emancipatory dimension for North African women migrating to the Gulf countries. Also, I am particularly interested in themes related to race, gender, the issue of refugees and asylum seekers in European societies. I am a teacher-researcher at the University of Lorraine and fellow of the Convergence Migrations Institute, member of the European research group WELDI transnational project for refugees.
