The need to protect displaced populations as part of ensuring that “environmental migration” is managed in “a humane and orderly manner”.

Environmental migration - Persons who for reasons of sudden or progressive changes in the environment that adversely affect their lives or living conditions, are obliged to leave their habitual homes, or choose to do so, either temporarily or permanently, and who move either within their territory or abroad.

• Recognizing the rights of island communities to their ancestral lands, while acknowledging the role that migration has played, and will continue to play, as an adaptation strategy to a changing environment.
