As recorrentes secas, a fraca produtividade do setor agrícola e as crises alimentares da década de setenta (século XX) levam a uma aceleração do êxodo rural e à generalização das migrações (internas (inter-ilhas) e internacionais) em Cabo Verde. [...] Os dados históricos mostram que Cabo Verde sofreu no último século secas severas e recorrentes, que resultaram numa elevada taxa de mortalidade e implicaram custos significativos nos meios de subsistência, essencialmente agrícolas, das comunidades. Antes da sua independência em 1975, este ciclo de secas (...) causaram sucessivas crises alimentares, períodos de fome generalizada e migração forçada. [...] .

The recurrent droughts, the low productivity of the agricultural sector and the food crises of the seventies (20th century) lead to an acceleration of the rural exodus and the generalization of migrations (internal (inter-island) and international) in Cape Verde. [...] Historical data show that Cape Verde suffered in the last century severe and recurrent droughts, which resulted in a high mortality rate and involved significant cost for communities in the livelihoods, essentially agricultural. Before independence in 1975, this cycle of droughts (...) caused successive food crises, periods of widespread famine and forced migration. [...].
