Strengthening the Capacities of IGAD and its Member States to Support Regional Migration Policies in the Horn of Africa (SIMPI)
The SIMPI project supports the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its member states in developing and implementing migration and displacement policies in the Horn of Africa. The regional project focuses on three areas of action: migration and displacement policies, cross-border cooperation to improve basic services for migrants, refugees and host communities, learning and data. It is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The SIMPI project supports IGAD's cross-border cooperation in Moyale/Moyale at the Ethiopian-Kenyan border and Metemma/Gallabat at the Ethiopian-Sudanese border and empowers local administrations to include migrants in basic service delivery (GCM objective 15). Joint engagements of mobile populations and host communities are stimulated with targeted cash transfers to strengthen social cohesion in border areas in the IGAD region (GCM objective 16).
The German government supports IGAD together with AUC, IOM, ILO and Statistic Sweden to establish a harmonized system for reliable, disaggregated and comparable regional data on migration (in line with GCM objective 1) and promotes learning to provide a better basis for evidence-based policy making.
