Debt and the Migration Experience: Insights From South-East Asia

Debt and indebtedness are central to the lives of South-East Asian migrants. Indebtedness can motivate the need for migration; migrants regularly use loans to finance costly cross-border moves, and the remittances migrants send home are often used to repay household debt. There is a need for a better understanding of the interlinkage between migration, remittances and debt and its interlinkages to the depth and breadth of financial inclusion.
