Migration Data using Social Media: A European Perspective

This paper estimates the number of expatriates in 17 EU countries using Facebook data on “expats” and proposes a method to account for over- or under-representation of Facebook users in the actual population. Whilst acknowledging the methodological and data-integrity issues of using data from social media, the paper highlights the potential of big data sources to provide more insights on migration.
