Balanced Narratives on Migrants and Refugees

TENTATIVE DEADLINE OF IMPLEMENTATION:
At the 2022 IMRF, Canada pledged to increase its financial support to the It Takes a Community (ITAC) global social media campaign in 2022-2023, with the aim of promoting balanced public narratives on migrants and refugees worldwide, combatting xenophobia and discrimination, and supporting social cohesion.

In a global context where public narratives on migrants and refugees have been deeply polarized and increasingly fail to recognize the nuanced nature of migration, promoting balanced narratives has been a key international migration objective for Canada – it is one of the areas of focus for our commitments as a GCM champion country. Canada partnered with the Mayors Mechanism (representatives of local authorities) from the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), with the Government of Ecuador, and the International Organization of Migration (IOM), to lead the implementation of ITAC and to promote ITAC as a global, multi-stakeholder, digital campaign that aims to highlight migrants’ contribution to society and balance migration narratives worldwide.

In 2022-2023, Canada has continued to co-chair and support the ITAC campaign. Canada also encourages interested states and partners to join our ITAC pledge and contribute to the ITAC implementation.
