Current Chief Director for Demography and Population Statistics at Statistics South Africa where his main responsibilities include the publication of annual population estimates as well as research output related to mortality, fertility and migration. He is currently the co-chair of the UN expert group on international migration statistics and is also an adviser to the IOM-GMDAC. Mr Iturralde is a regular contributor to discussions with the Statistics Institute of the African Union (StatAfric) for issues related to migration.

My research interests lie in the areas of civil society, migration, and international education. My most recent publication is a monograph based on my PhD on local civil society groups supporting international students in Japan and my first postdoctoral project on the impact of the pandemic: www.routledge.com/9781032332086 My current project is a comparative study on loneliness and social engagement among international students in the UK and Japan. With Dr Lara Momesso, I co-edited a volume on refugees and asylum seekers in Japan and Taiwan to be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2024. In addition, I have participated in several collaborative projects in Japan, Australia, UK and US, published six peer-reviewed journal articles and have been an invited speaker at universities in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, and Japan.

I am a sociologist and I hold a Ph.D. degree in Political and Social Sciences from Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain, Belgium). I have several years of teaching and research experience, through which I developed expertise in migration studies (South-South migration, return migration, migration and development), particularly in South America, drawing on fieldwork experiences in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil.

Dirk Jacobs (°1971) is full professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is affiliated to the Group for Research on Ethnic Relations, Migration and Equality (GERME) at the Institut de Sociologie. His main research topics are sociology of education and migration and integration policies.

He is the former director of GERME and currently director of EBxl, the research network for Brussels Studies at ULB.

Jacobs studied sociology at Ghent University and obtained his PhD in social sciences at Utrecht University in 1998. He is affiliated to ULB since 2004 and was appointed full professor in 2012. He has been an invited professor at Amsterdam University (UvA), Leibniz Universität Hannover, Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven et Vesalius College (VUB).

In 2011 he received an ERC Grant for the project “Equal opportunities for migrant youth in educational systems with high levels of social and ethnic segregation – assessing the impact of school team resources”.

He was one of the founding members of the G1000. He is a board member of asbl Pouvoir Organisateur Pluriel (les écoles plurielles) and of Foyer in Molenbeek.

I'm a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw, Poland, where I’m exploring the subjects of socio-economic geography and spatial planning.
My research interests are connected with mobility, migration studies, multilocality, social geography and spatial management.
